What is waterproof flooring, and why is it so popular?

Up until recently, there were only two waterproof choices for flooring: luxury vinyl and tile. However, two more options are taking the industry by storm because, no matter where you live, we all have those moments when we spill a gallon of milk, juice, kool-aid, or iced coffee, etc. Before we go further, though, you need to understand the difference between waterproof and water-resistant.

Is something waterproof if it’s resistant to water?

No, waterproof means utterly impervious to liquid. The product is constructed of 100% waterproof materials, so the capability is inherent. You can spill on it, or it can be submerged, and it will be fine. Water-resistant means that while the liquid is repelled, there's still a chance that it can penetrate, stain and peel.

About waterproof vinyl flooring

This is a newer version of luxury vinyl (LVF), engineered, so it's thicker, more durable, and has a technologically advanced core, either the WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite.) It offers the highest level of moisture protection with the same style as LVF. The true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tile are created with digital photography, so they're clear, accurate, and vibrant. There is embossing and micro beveling to add depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. The material can be cut into planks to mimic hardwood or groutable squares to echo stone or tile.

Waterproof laminate flooring

Laminate flooring has long been a popular and alternative to genuine wood, and it only got more realistic over time with digital photography, micro beveling, and embossing. Since this multi-layered product is composed of wood byproducts, it's always been recommended to avoid installation in wet areas like the bath or kitchen. With this version, you can now install it anywhere.

Now unique construction and materials make this waterproof from the top. The liquid will not soak through the interlocks, creating staining and peeling. Spills sit there (for any length of time), waiting to be wiped off.
